Bedehuis Bethanië is home to the Afrikaans Orthodox Church of Saint Mary of Egypt. Besides the church and the quarters of the priest, the Bedehuis also contains limited guest accommodation and a large common room and meeting space.
Bethanië is also the base for the missionary activities of the Afrikaans Orthodox Fellowship of Saint John the Baptist, which exists to make Orthodox Christianity better known among Afrikaans-speaking South Africans. Its priest, Father Zacharias van Wyk, has done extensive work in translating Orthodox liturgical texts, in collaboration with Father Jacobus van der Riet in Johannesburg, and setting them to music.
The Divine Liturgy is served in the church at 8.30 a.m. each Sunday and on major feast days, preceded by Matins at 7.15 a.m. Vespers is at 5 p.m. on Saturday evenings.
